Welcome to the Accounting Gateway Exam!

The School of Accounting Faculty is delighted that you have chosen to continue with your education in accounting. We have found that students who are well-prepared from the first two principles classes do well in upper division accounting classes. On the other hand, students who are not well prepared often have a less successful experience. To help all of our students do their best in the upper division accounting classes, we have created the Accounting Gateway Exam.

What is it?

The Gateway Exam is a one hour and fifteen minute exam that covers important topics from the first two principles of accounting classes (at Oklahoma State University these are ACCT 2103 and 2203). These questions are directly relevant to the material you'll be learning in the 3000-level classes. A “Topic Listing” is provided on the Online Classroom page after you register to take the exam.

Why?

The Gateway Exam will help you determine whether or not you understand the accounting principles you need to succeed in upper-division accounting classes. By studying for and taking this exam, you'll have a good review of the prior material and be able to hit the ground running in the first week of class. This will put all students on the same footing, giving them a good chance to succeed.

Who has to take this Exam?

Everyone enrolling in ACCT 3013, 3103, 3203, and 3603 starting in Fall 2009 must take the Gateway Exam - no matter where or when they took principles of accounting. There is an exception - see the next question.

Are there any exceptions?

If you have taken and passed the Accounting Gateway Exam, you do not have to take the exam again. Any other exception would have to be made by permission of the Head of the School of Accounting.

When is it offered?

The Gateway Exam will be administered on three days prior to the Spring 2010 semester (November 7, December 5, and January 9). There will be two exams administered on each testing date at the Stillwater campus.

The Gateway Exam may also be taken at the OSU-Stillwater or OSU-Tulsa testing centers for a fee and subject to the testing centers’ hours of operation and capacity limits. The exam will be available at the testing centers from November 9, 2009 – January 15, 2010 (with exception of the holidays). Note that most testing centers are not open on weekends!

You may view the hours of operation for the OSU-Stillwater testing center at http://uat.okstate.edu/testing/ or contact the testing center at (405) 744-5958. You must make an appointment to take the exam.

Information regarding the testing center at OSU-Tulsa is available at http://www.osu-tulsa.okstate.edu/lsc/testing.asp and you may contact the OSU-Tulsa testing center at (918) 594-8232 to make an appointment to take the exam.

Be sure to bring a valid ID (OSU Student ID, drivers license, etc.) and your OKEY username and password to any Accounting Gateway Exam location. Results will be posted on the Online Classroom Gateway Exam page.

What if I pass?

Congratulations! You simply continue with the class as usual - ready to learn new material.

What if I DON'T pass?

You're not ready for the upper division class and will be dropped from the class. You'll need to be prepared to enroll in another class for this semester. Your advisor is available to help you with alternative classes. Remember, you have until the end of the first week of classes to add another class without instructor permission. Speed is important.

Can I retake the Gateway Exam?

Yes! You may take the exam up to two (2) times in the testing window. Be sure to study the additional materials on this site and take the practice exams to help you brush up on your skills.
