Spears School students participate in etiquette dinner

Etiquette dinnerMore than 120 Spears School students attended an etiquette dinner Sept. 9, 2008. This is the second year for program, titled “Outclassing the Competition.” The dinner, sponsored by the Spears School Alumni Board and hosted by Spears School Career Services, featured etiquette consultant Betsy Hildenbrand of the Hoover Etiquette & Protocol Center in Oklahoma City.

Lindsay Vallaster, Spears School business internship specialist, said the dinner helps prepare students for the fall recruiting season.

“Getting a job is much more than what you know and the technical skills you possess,” said Lindsay Vallaster, Spears School business internship specialist. “A lot of hiring decisions are based on soft skills and student’s ability to project a professional image during the recruiting session.”

The evening began with an etiquette tutorial that sought to give students tools they need to project a professional image. Vallaster said the tutorial will help students approach interviews and dining situations with employers with confidence.

After the tutorial, students had the opportunity to put the tools into practice over a meal. A Spears School Alumni Board member, a Spears School faculty or staff member, or a member of Spears School Career Services hosted each table.

Spears School distance learning master’s programs named “Best Buy”

GetEducated.comTwo Spears School distance learning programs recently were named a “Best Buy” by a national editorial review team for combining quality and affordability. The distance learning Master of Science in Telecommunications Management and Master of Management in Information Systems programs were ranked in the top 10 nationally by a review team from GetEducated.com.

"It's certainly an honor to have these programs recognized," said Jay Boyington, assistant director for Graduate Programs in Spears School. "Our distance learning students continue to work while earning their degrees, and tuition cost and the time commitment are major considerations for choosing online programs."

GetEducated.com is a consumer watchdog and advocacy group that rates, ranks, and verifies the cost, quality and credibility of online colleges and universities. A Best Buy designation from GetEducated.com indicates a program has been reviewed and judged to offer a high-quality distance master's degree to a national audience at tuition rates well below the national average. read more

Spears School student experiences the real world of HR

Finding an HR internship can be tough. According to HR students, not that many companies offer internships in HR. Many are low paying or unpaid, and students have to choose between furthering their careers and finding jobs to help pay back student loans. To help students afford to take internships, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) launched an intern sponsorship program in June 2008. Forty HR interns around the country received $5,000 grants to help them pay back loans, travel to and from internships, or find housing closer to internships. Lance Fannon, management senior, was one of those students.

Beth Mirza wrote about Lance's experience in the September 2008 issue of HR Magazine.
