The Department of Economics and Legal Studies in Business is part of the William S. Spears School of Business (SSB), one of eight resident education colleges on the Stillwater campus of Oklahoma State University. With 4,500 undergraduate students and over 500 graduate students, the Spears School of Business maintains a strong academic presence on campus. OSU is composed of four campuses and extensive off-campus instructional and assistance programs. OSU’s Stillwater campus has an enrollment of over 24,000 students, with a full-time faculty of nearly 1,000.

The Department of Economics offers course work leading to the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. These programs prepare economists for academic careers and for research and administrative positions in business, government, and other organizations.

The Master’s program serves the dual purpose of preparing students for doctoral study and for employment in business and government. Graduates from the Department have had success in finding positions with public utilities, state and federal government agencies, private industry and financial institutions. Graduates of the Master’s program have also gone on to obtain doctorates at Oklahoma State University and other major universities throughout the United States.

The Department offers a well-rounded graduate program designed to meet the needs of the vast majority of students. Course work and examinations are offered in select areas and fields of economics. The program also has sufficient flexibility for students to take course work in other disciplines if so desired. The Department has an ongoing series of workshops in which Economics faculty from OSU and other universities participate. The Economics Workshop is a vehicle by which graduate students can observe and participate in current research.

All graduate students are subject to the regulations and policies established by the Graduate College at Oklahoma State University. The regulations governing all graduate work at the University are contained in the current Graduate College catalog. All graduate students are expected to become familiar with these regulations. This Graduate Studies Guide provides relevant information regarding the graduate programs in economics and their particular requirements. This Guide is not a substitute for the Graduate College Catalog. Ultimate responsibility for meeting Graduate College regulations and requirements rests with each student.
