The 33-hour program
includes an 18-hour common core of courses; a 9-hour option in Digital Business
Systems, Knowledge Management Systems, or Information Assurance and Security;
and 6 hours of electives. Electives may be selected from courses offered through
the M.B.A., the M.S. in telecommunications management, the M.S. in accounting,
or the M.S. in computer science degree programs.
- Advanced Database Management takes the student from
relational database theory to the implementation and practice of today’s global
databases in an e-commerce environment
- Enterprise Resource Planning or Enterprise Systems
represent one of the most important business technologies today and offer
seamless, integrated, real-time company information. They are based upon
horizontal business processes that cut across the traditional business functions
of marketing, finance, accounting, and manufacturing. This core class allows the
student to implement selected processes through an ERP software system, which we
have implemented as a result of a partnership with a leading ERP
company.
- Advanced Systems Development covers theory and applications
for business development from an enterprise-wide perspective.
- Advanced File and Data Management for Business provides a
design perspective, with object-oriented programming, of business data storage
methodologies and file management techniques for business
enterprises.
- Telecommunications Systems covers the foundations of
computer communications networks, focusing on the ways that voice, data and
video traffic is moved across long distances, thereby laying the groundwork for
network and information system security.
- Practicum or Internship this provides the student with the
practical experience so necessary to complete the theoretical knowledge and
technical training they receive in other classes in the curriculum
.
- Electives: Students select one of three options for their
area of emphasis, and they choose three graduate classes for depth in that area.
Additionally students select two graduate electives to enhance existing skills
or gain new ones. Typical areas include, but are not limited to, marketing,
finance, accounting, MIS, telecommunications, or computer science.
Course Requirements for the M.S. in MIS (33 Hours)
Figure 1 shows the prerequisites and the structure for the M.S. in MIS along with the required 33 hours of coursework. Appropriate courses for eliminating academic deficiencies are discussed above and shown in Table 1.
The M.S. Common Core classes, required of every candidate for the M.S. in MIS, include 18 hours and are shown in Figure 1. They are TCOM 5123 (Telecommunications Systems), MSIS 5133 (Advanced IT for e-Commerce), MSIS 5643 (Advanced Database Management), MSIS 5653 (Advanced Systems Development), MSIS 5123 (Enterprise Resource Planning), and MSIS 5900 (MIS Practicum). Additionally every student has 6 elective hours to supplement his/her program. These hours should be used to strengthen the student’s weak areas.
Also shown in Figure 1 are three options that are available to the M.S. in MIS student. A student will select one of these options, each of which requires 9 hours of coursework. The three options are Digital Business Systems; Knowledge Management Systems; and Information Assurance and Security. Digital Business Systems emphasizes software development and strategies for developing and implementing effective information systems in business; Knowledge Management Systems addresses data mining and tool-oriented problem solution, with the primary goal of obtaining information from business databases and organizing it into knowledge that supports strategic decision-making. Information and Assurance investigates the various technical aspects of attacking and of guarding against attacks and failures in various types of networked information systems, and emphasizes management initiatives for managing network and information system security to protect against unauthorized intrusion. Course descriptions for classes offered in the three options are shown in Attachment A.
