The Master of Science
in Management Information Systems Program (MS in MIS) offers a unique blend
of theoretical coursework and hands-on application that enables graduates to
understand business processes and concepts, as well as the design and maintenance
of information systems through their technical expertise.
IN DEMAND:
With the growth in e-commerce, the need for upgraded information systems
and web-based applications is at an all time high. Therefore, today's business environment
is heavily reliant on professionals who are both business managers (those who understand
finance and accounting decisions) and technicians (those who can implement information
systems strategies). Graduates of the Master of Science in Management Information Systems
(M.S. in MIS) have the business, technical and leaderships skills to meet the challenges
where business disciplines meet technology.
THEORETICAL & APPLIED CURRICULUM:
Combining strong
theoretical concepts with intense hands-on instruction, the M.S. in MIS is a
thriving program being offered by the William S. Spears School of Business at
OSU. According to Dr. Meg Kletke, MIS director and professor of management science
and information systems, "The MS in MIS prepares graduates not only to understand
business processes and the concepts behind the information systems they work
with, but also to develop, modify, use and protect these rapidly-changing computing
systems through their technical expertise. Three options, Digital Business Systems,
Knowledge Management Systems, and Information Assurance and Security, afford
the student opportunities to focus on software design and implementation, information
retrieval and analysis, or management of network and information system security
to protect information systems against unauthorized intrusion."
SOPHISTICATED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES:
In addition to
cutting-edge software in various student labs including the Telecommunications
Lab and the Trading Floor, the OSU Library offers a world-class research facility
with numerous online journals in the field of information systems. Also, the
Spears School of Business recently established the Institute for Research
in Information Systems (IRIS) and a new academic department for Management Science
and Information Systems (MSIS), which is now the home for the MS in MIS Program.
TEAMWORK AND INTERACTION:
For students, the
MS in MIS Program facilitates opportunities for professional growth, leadership,
friendship and personal interactions with faculty members and industry professionals.
Students gain practical experience by applying the theoretical knowledge acquired
in classrooms to real-world projects. This program exposes members to hands-on
professional experience, which serves as a great advantage in the competitive
job market.
