Transfer Policy

Course Petitions:
All course petitions (regarding a course(s) taken from another university or another department at OSU) must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the beginning of the semester in which students wish to take petitioned course work. Petitions should address the following points:

  1. course name and number
  2. semester in which the course will be taken
  3. institution at which the course will be taken (if applicable)
  4. course on Plan of Study for which the petitioned course will substitute
  5. reason(s) for wishing to take the petitioned course, i.e., how will this course add value to the degree and career plans
  6. syllabus or other relevant material illustrating course content

All petitions should be addressed to:
MSTM Program Committee
Attn: Dr. Mark Weister
102 Gundersen
Oklahoma State University
Stillwater, OK 74078-4011
FAX: 405-744-7474

For more information regarding the petition process, students should contact the MSTM Program Director.

Transfer Credits:
For various reasons, students may find it necessary to complete course work at another institution for transfer to the OSU MSTM program. Prior approval from the MSTM Director is required for transfer credits. In general, the following guidelines apply for MSTM transfer credit:

  1. No more than nine credit hours will be accepted;
  2. Only graduate-level engineering, computer science, or business-related courses will be accepted (business courses must come from accredited business schools, as recognized by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business);
  3. Prior course work cannot be older than 10 years old at the point when you graduate from the MSTM program.

Approval from the MSTM Director is obtained through the normal petition process noted above. Upon completion of the transfer course work, the student is required to provide the MSTM Program Office with two official copies of the transcript covering the transfer course(s).

After graduation, your OSU transcript will have a statement showing the number of hours you transferred and the institution which granted the credit. The tranferred course(s) prefix, number and title will not appear.

Waiver of Residency Requirement:
All graduate students are required to complete the final nine hours of their degree requirements in residence. For distance learning students, this simply means taking OSU classes. You do not have to physically be on the OSU campus. If the credit hours the student wishes to transfer to the OSU MSTM program fall within this final nine hour period, the student may petition for a waiver of the university residency requirement. To request a waiver of the residency requirement:

  1. The student must petition the Dean of the Graduate College in letter form requesting a waiver of the residency requirement. The petition should refer to the specific course(s) to be transferred, the institution at which the course(s) will be taken, and the address to which the Graduate College's decision should be mailed. Prior to writing the petition, the student should discuss with the MSTM Program Director which courses and educational institutions are acceptable.
  2. The petition is then sent to the MSTM Program Director who determines if the course(s) can be substituted into the student's Plan of Study and whether the institution is acceptable. If no problems are identified, the MSTM Program Director sends the student's petition, a letter supporting the student's petition, and a copy of the student's updated Plan of Study to the Dean of the Graduate College.
  3. The student's petition is reviewed by the Graduate College. Once a decision has been reached concerning the student's petition, the Graduate College notifies the MSTM program office and the student of their decision.

Upon completion of the transfer course work, the student is required to provide the MSTM program office with two official copies of the transcript covering the transfer course(s). Often times, it is not possible for a student to graduate in the same semester in which transfer course work is completed simply because it is difficult to get transcripts sent from other universities in time for the student to be cleared for graduation. When this happens, the student will file for graduation in the semester immediately following completion of the transfer course work.
