The Department of Economics and Legal Studies in Business is part of the William
S. Spears School of Business (SSB), one of eight resident education colleges on
the Stillwater campus of Oklahoma State University. With 4,500 undergraduate
students and over 500 graduate students, the Spears School of Business maintains
a strong academic presence on campus. OSU is composed of four campuses and
extensive off-campus instructional and assistance programs. OSU’s Stillwater
campus has an enrollment of over 24,000 students, with a full-time faculty of
nearly 1,000.
The Doctoral
program prepares individuals for academic careers and for research and
administrative positions in business and government. Graduates of the Doctoral
program have accepted academic positions at Fresno State University, Korea
Energy Economics Institute/Seoul, Valdosta State University, DePaul University,
the University of Arkansas, Louisiana State University, the University of
Wisconsin at Madison, Auburn University at Montgomery, and many others. They
have obtained research positions at the University of Maryland School of
Pharmacy, Department of Commerce, the Federal Trade Commission, World Bank
Development Program in Sudan, the Federal Reserve System, and other government
agencies. Graduates of the Doctoral program have also gone on to such
administrative positions as Prime Minister of South Korea, the Vice President
for University Relations and Extension at Oklahoma State University, Chancellor
of the University of Alaska, and Vice President of Shearson-Lehman Brothers.
The Department
offers a well-rounded graduate program designed to meet the needs of the vast
majority of students. Course work and examinations are offered in select areas
and fields of economics. The program also has sufficient flexibility for
students to take course work in other disciplines if so desired. The Department
has an ongoing series of workshops in which Economics faculty from OSU and other
universities participate. The Economics Workshop is a vehicle by which graduate
students can observe and participate in current research.
All graduate
students are subject to the regulations and policies established by the Graduate
College at Oklahoma State University. The regulations governing all graduate
work at the University are contained in the current Graduate College catalog.
All graduate students are expected to become familiar with these regulations.
This Graduate Studies Guide provides relevant information regarding the graduate
programs in economics and their particular requirements. This Guide is not a
substitute for the Graduate College Catalog. Ultimate responsibility for meeting
Graduate College regulations and requirements rests with each student.
