The Department of Economics and Legal Studies in Business is part of the William S. Spears School of Business (SSB), one of eight resident education colleges on the Stillwater campus of Oklahoma State University. With 4,500 undergraduate students and over 500 graduate students, the Spears School of Business maintains a strong academic presence on campus. OSU is composed of four campuses and extensive off-campus instructional and assistance programs. OSU’s Stillwater campus has an enrollment of over 24,000 students, with a full-time faculty of nearly 1,000.

The Doctoral program prepares individuals for academic careers and for research and administrative positions in business and government. Graduates of the Doctoral program have accepted academic positions at Fresno State University, Korea Energy Economics Institute/Seoul, Valdosta State University, DePaul University, the University of Arkansas, Louisiana State University, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Auburn University at Montgomery, and many others. They have obtained research positions at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Department of Commerce, the Federal Trade Commission, World Bank Development Program in Sudan, the Federal Reserve System, and other government agencies. Graduates of the Doctoral program have also gone on to such administrative positions as Prime Minister of South Korea, the Vice President for University Relations and Extension at Oklahoma State University, Chancellor of the University of Alaska, and Vice President of Shearson-Lehman Brothers.

The Department offers a well-rounded graduate program designed to meet the needs of the vast majority of students. Course work and examinations are offered in select areas and fields of economics. The program also has sufficient flexibility for students to take course work in other disciplines if so desired. The Department has an ongoing series of workshops in which Economics faculty from OSU and other universities participate. The Economics Workshop is a vehicle by which graduate students can observe and participate in current research.

All graduate students are subject to the regulations and policies established by the Graduate College at Oklahoma State University. The regulations governing all graduate work at the University are contained in the current Graduate College catalog. All graduate students are expected to become familiar with these regulations. This Graduate Studies Guide provides relevant information regarding the graduate programs in economics and their particular requirements. This Guide is not a substitute for the Graduate College Catalog. Ultimate responsibility for meeting Graduate College regulations and requirements rests with each student.
