Procedure for Qualifying Exam
Note: This assumes that the student’s second semester in the program is a Spring semester. If the second semester is a Fall semester, the dates are indicated in parentheses.
  1. Register for the BADM 6100 course (for the upcoming fall or spring semester).
  2. Form Doctoral Program Committee
  3. Choose Qualifying Exam Research Supervisor (This is typically your program committee chair, but could be any faculty)
  4. By June 15 (February 15), decide on topic and develop a research plan. Research Plan should include name of topic, name of supervising faculty, a brief abstract of research, steps in the research process, milestones and completion dates for each milestone, and target journals(s). The final submission date of the completed manuscript is November 1 (July 1).
  5. Obtain approval of research plan from supervising faculty.
  6. Submit approved research plan to PhD Coordinator and program committee members.
  7. Make certain no “I” grades are left from earlier coursework. All “I” grades have to cleared prior to the beginning of the semester in which the qualifying exam will be administered. That is, students whose qualifying exam date is November 1 should have cleared all “I” grades prior to the beginning of the fall semester and students whose qualifying exam date is July1 should have cleared all “I” grades prior to the last day of final exams of the spring semester.
  8. Submit research output for each milestone to supervising faculty.
  9. Submit completed manuscript to supervising faculty by November 1 (July 1).
  10. On or before November 1 (July 1), supervising faculty shall submit the completed manuscript to the Qualifying Review Committee.
  11. Qualifying Review committee shall choose external reviewers and perform both internal and external assessment.
  12. All ratings of the research shall be returned to the qualifying Review Committee no later than December 7 (August 7).
  13. Qualifying Review Committee will meet and discuss ratings as well as the candidate’s overall performance in the program (one week timeframe)
  14. Candidate will be notified of results of the Qualifying Exam on the Wednesday after finals week (August 21).
