Personal and Professional Background
I was born and brought up in the City of Joy
(Calcutta -- a city
of about 12 million people). My undergraduate degree was in
Mechanical Engineering and I graduated in 1980. I joined Union
Carbide India Ltd. (a subsidiary of Union Carbide, U.S.A.) as a
maintenance engineer and stayed with this company until 1982. In
Union Carbide, my responsibilities included the operation and
preventive maintenance of a battery production line.
In 1982, I decided to switch my career and joined Tribeni Tissues
Ltd. (a subsidiary of British American Tobacco, U.K.) as a
Management Trainee. I also enrolled in a two-year evening executive
MBA program in 1982. I stayed with Tribeni Tissues until 1986 and
was promoted to the rank of Assistant Manager (Marketing). In these
four years, my responsibilities included regional sales management,
new products and strategic planning, and managing export to South
East Asian markets.
In 1986, I decided to switch careers again and became a
professional student. I joined the University of Iowa in 1986 and
graduated from there in 1991 with Ph. D in marketing and M.S. in
Applied Statistics. I joined OSU in the Fall of 1991 and have had a
great time teaching primarily quantitative marketing courses at the
undergraduate, MBA, and Ph.D. levels.
Besides teaching and research, I enjoy spending time with my
family and playing contract bridge in
tournaments.
