SAS and OSU Data Mining Certificate Program

In Fall 2004, OSU partnered with SAS, a leading provider of data analysis and data mining software, to offer graduate students to earn SAS/OSU data mining certificate. The program development was spearheaded by Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, Professor (Marketing). Students in this program take courses offered by various faculty from the Marketing and MSIS departments at the Spears School of Business.

In only three years, the program has awarded 98 certificates, making it one of SAS's largest programs. The success of this program can be attributed to the dedication of Dr. Chakraborty and the uniqueness of the program design. Having a background in both engineering and marketing, Dr. Chakraborty wanted the program to appeal to students from various disciplines and backgrounds. This is reflected in the curriculum of this program.  The students in this program come from various fields such as Industrial Engineering, Management Science Information Systems, International Business and Business Administration.

In Spring 2007, twelve students from OSU/SAS data mining certificate program successfully completed the SAS certification exam in predictive modeling using Enterprise Miner. The OSU/SAS data mining certification program will continue to prepare graduate students to take the SAS certification exam in prediction modeling. For more information about SAS certification in Predictive Modeling with Enterprise Miner, visit SAS Predictive Modeling Certification. In Spring 2008, 60 students from Professor Chakraborty’s data mining class are going to sit for the SAS predictive modeling certification exam.

In Fall 2007, OSU also started Graduate Certificate In Business Data Mining program to meet the needs to working professionals who may not want to pursue a full-fledged masters degree yet want to earn a certificate in data mining. Most of the courses in the graduate certificate in business data mining program are offered via distance-learning (online) mode enabling non-traditional working professionals to complete the graduate certificate in business data mining while continuing to work.
In Fall 2007, three teams from OSU’s data mining certificate program took the top 3 spots in the national data mining shootout competition sponsored by SAS and Inductis. One member from each OSU team won an all expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas, where they presented their findings at the data mining conference attended by more than 800+ professionals and academics.
