Ph.D. in Business Administration
-
Management Science and Information Systems (MSIS) Option
The Ph.D. Program in Business Administration, MSIS option, at Oklahoma
State prepares candidates for academic careers involving high quality
research and instruction. Currently, this program is available only
full-time on the Stillwater campus. It is not available part-time or
through distance education, or at other campuses. Before
applying for the program, please visit the link, What
do MIS PhDs do? and in particular, "Why
get a PhD". There are four specializations offered under
the MSIS option:
- Management Information Systems (MIS)
- Telecommunications Management (TCOM) -- (
U.S.
Citizens:
IASP
Scholarship Program)
Management Science (MS)
Production and Operations Management (POM)
Students take a common set of courses that cover all four
specializations. These are typically Ph.D. seminar courses (varying topics),
courses on research methods (statistical and quantitative courses), and
other courses offered by the department. Students without a background in
business administration will be required to take a core set of business
courses in management, finance, accounting, marketing and economics. In addition, students may also take courses in other
departments such as management, computer science, industrial engineering,
electrical engineering, among others, depending on their area of
specialization. Some students may also have the opportunity to work closely
with the Institute for Research in Information Systems (IRIS) and the
Center for Telecommunications and Network Security Management (CTANS).
Beginning fall 2007, additional scholarship money (beyond our usual
assistantship and tuition waivers) will be available to applicants with
outstanding qualifications.
Admission Requirements
Outstanding students in any field of study may apply. It is normally
expected that the applicant will have obtained a master's degree prior to
the initial enrollment in the program, but exceptions may be made in
appropriate circumstances. Students are admitted based upon the perceived
likelihood of placement success in an academic career at other peer institutions. These factors
include the standardized tests (such as GMAT) but also additional
information that assesses research and teaching potential.
Factors include:
- GMAT performance (600 minimum) - REQUIRED. Our GMAT program code
is:
V0W-5V-03
Grades from all previous institutions of higher education
Business/industry experience
Prior teaching experience
If English is a second language, performance on TOEFL (625 minimum) (required
of all International Students)
Assessment of potential to conduct research (based on previous
research papers, projects etc.)
Letters of recommendation
More detailed information may be found in
the University
Catalog.
Early in the program, an assessment of a candidate's ability and
potential to conduct research will be made and will be used to decide
whether a student can continue in the program.
