Plan of Study

A Plan of Study is a listing of the courses that will comprise a graduate degree program. The initial Plan of Study (POS) should be prepared before the end of your first semester. Assistance is available, but the plan of study is your responsibility; failure to submit a plan could prohibit you from future enrollment.

Below is an example of a finished plan. You may find you have questions as to what is needed as you start completing the form. Some of the frequently asked questions are addressed here.

  1. Use your Social Security Number for the Student ID Number.
  2. The major subject and major department are both TCOM.
  3. The MSTM program does not offer options, specializations, or minors.
  4. The space provided to list your previous college(s) attended with degrees earned and dates conferred is limited; abbreviate as much as possible while providing enough information to make clear where you attended school, what degree you earned, and the month and year your degree was conferred.
  5. The Committee is composed of Weiser, Scheets, Mayfield and Wilson.
  6. Check no on the research involving human subjects question.
  7. Check Creative Component as your option; this refers to TCOM 5163 Telecommunications Practicum.
Example Plan of Study

You should consider the requirements of the degree, the availability of courses in a given semester, and how you want to use your electives.

The Graduate College provides Plan of Study forms for you to download and complete.  The Graduate College created a form in Word allowing you to tab from one field to another.

The plan of study must be on file with the OSU Graduate College prior to enrollment in the seventeenth hour of graduate course work. Students are encouraged to submit Plans of Study prior to this deadline. The initial POS includes a listing of the core courses to be taken, planned elective courses, and the intended sequence of enrollment in these courses.

Stillwater and distance learning students should email their completed plan to Jay Boyington for review and approval. OSU-Tulsa students should submit their plans to Lori Coggins. Your plan will be submitted to the Graduate College once the degree committee grants approval.

Changes in the POS may be made with the approval of the MSTM Director when the student's interests change or when course scheduling requires such changes. Keep in mind that if you earn a grade below a C in any course appearing on the POS, it cannot be removed. This applies to substitutions as well.

Prior to graduation, you must file an updated POS with the OSU Graduate College if your course work deviates from the original plan.
