Management Science and Information Systems
|
People enter the MSTM Program with basically four backgrounds:
- Management Information Systems (Business)
- Computer Science
- Electrical Engineering
- Other (general business, journalism, philosophy, etc.)
Assumptions:
- Entrants in the "other" category should learn some "technical" skills to enhance employability. Then, even if they do not aspire to do technical jobs in their careers, they can still get "in the door" with a telecom company then move up the managerial ladder.
- All other entrants have varying degrees of technical proficiency, but all have marketable technical skills such that enrolling in management electives in the MSTM Program will not impede their employability.
Technical List #1 - Management Science and Information Systems
- MSIS 5643 - Advanced Database Management
- MSIS 5633 - Decision Support and Expert Systems
- MSIS 4373 - Advanced Topics in MIS
- MSIS 4363 - Advanced Topics in Systems Development
- Other 4000 and 5000-level MSIS courses approved for graduate credit.
Technical List #2 - Computer Science
- CS 5154 - Computer Science Migration (This course should be taken prior to other COMSC classes if student does not have a COMSC background.)
- CS 5373 - C++ and OOP for Telecommunications
- CS 5423 - Information Organization and Retrieval
- CS 5413 - Data Structures
- Other 4000 and 5000-level Computer Science courses approved for graduate credit.
Technical List #3 - Electrical Engineering
- ECEN 5050 - Seminar (topics vary)
- ECEN 5533 - Modern Communication Theory
- ECEN 5543 - Data Transportation and Protection
- ECEN 5643 - Antennas and propagation for Wireles Communications
- ECEN 5833 - Fiber-optics Communications Systems
- Other 4000 and 5000-level ECEN courses approved for graduate credit.
- TCOM 5012 - Telecommunications Laboratory
- TCOM 5153 - International Telecommunications Management

- MGMT 5553 - Management of Technology and Innovation
Elective options for students with various backgrounds:
Students may choose all technical or all management electives or a mix of technical and management courses.
Management Information Systems Background
Computer Science Background
Electrical Engineering Background
Other Students (Assuming a non-technical background)
- The goal is to provide these students with some technical background. Pure management courses are discouraged as electives, since students will already have six credit hours of MBA courses as part of the core MSTM requirements
- MGMT 5553 - Management of Technology and Innovation could serve as a good bridge into the world of technology prior to taking an MSIS course
- Choose four electives from Technical List #1
