Marketing senior Erin Scanlan crowned Queen and more OSU Homecoming

Erin Scanlan, Spears School marketing and management senior from Portales, N.M. was crowned the 2014 Oklahoma State University Homecoming Queen on Saturday. “I was shocked when they said my name over the loud speaker. The entire court was so incredible and deserving. I’m so humbled and honored to be recognized and very excited to represent OSU for the next year,” Scanlan said. “I fell in love with Homecoming my freshman year at OSU, so experiencing my last homecoming as a senior in this way was like a dream.” On campus Scanlan is the Vice President on Business Student Council, Chaplain for Pi Beta Phi Sorority, President for Spears School Ambassadors, a member of the Mentorship Program for the Spears School, a Scholar Leader for the Spears School, FOCUS student leader, a member of the Student Alumni Board and she participates in various philanthropic activities both on and off campus. This past weekend was Scanlan family’s first visit to OSU during Homecoming and they weren’t disappointed. “They were in awe the entire weekend,” said Scanlan. She led her family through Walkaround, Homecoming & Hoops, the Homecoming parade, and OSU vs. West Virginia football game on Saturday. “The entire weekend they couldn’t stop talking about how exquisite OSU was and how impressed they were with the tradition of Homecoming.” After graduation, Scanlan will temporarily move to Denver, Colo., where she’ll serve as a missionary for the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). After a few weeks she’ll be assigned to a permanent college campus anywhere within the U.S. where she’ll work for the next two years. As a first generation cowgirl from New Mexico, Scanlan shares why she chose OSU. “The thing that set OSU apart from other universities for me was the absolute sense of community and family-like atmosphere. When I stepped foot on OSU’s campus my senior year of high school I felt like the University actually wanted me here as a student. They wanted to help me succeed. It was a very different feeling than I experienced anywhere else. Moreover, the people in Stillwater love this University so much, which I could see so clearly—that meant a lot coming from a girl who grew up in a small town in New Mexico. “I am so thankful for the experiences I have had to grow, learn, mature, and be mentored by incredible faculty, staff, and other individuals,” said Scanlan. “When I talk about OSU to people who don’t go to school here, they tend to desire so badly the benefits this campus gives to all of its students. I’m ecstatic to give back to OSU in ways that it has served me the past four years.”
