Spears School of Business will be offering Communication Certificate Series for Managers in Tulsa

Communications Certificate Series for ManagersThe Oklahoma State University Center for Executive and Professional Development at the Spears School of Business will be hosting a Communication Certificate Series for Managers from October to December in Tulsa. This program will sharpen business communication skills and achieve success by learning to deliver clear, persuasive and concise messages.

“This communication series brings a skill set to managers that is needed to thrive and succeed in their managerial roles,” said Jim Pappas, department head and associate professor of management. “Our instructors bring their experience and expertise to these programs, which will help leaders in their daily communication with their team, peers, and superiors.”

All sessions will be held at OSU-Tulsa.

The first session – Enhancing Employee Motivation through Coaching – is from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 28 and is presented by Raj Basu, vice president for academic affairs at OSU-Tulsa and associate professor management in the Spears School. In this session, participants will learn to recognize employee problems, create an environment of continuous improvement, and effectively lead their team through coaching.

Incorporating a Cultural Perspective into Communications, led by Cynthia Wang, associate professor of management and William S. Spears Chair of Business Administration in the Spears School, will be held from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Nov. 4. In this one-hour webinar, participants will learn to analyze the behavior of themselves and others, understand communication and management styles from around the world, and recognize, understand, analyze, and effectively use cross-cultural concepts.

On Nov. 11, Bryan Edwards, the Joe Synar Chair and associate professor of management in the Spears School, will present Managing Confrontations from 9 am-4pm. He will discuss how to approach confrontations in a different and more encouraging way. Participants will learn how to effectively manage confrontation, hold anyone and everyone accountable, master performance discussions, and motivate without using power.

Performance Management will be from 9 a.m.-noon Dec. 3 and will be led by Edwards. In this session, participants can expect to learn how to use qualitative rewards to motivate employees, motivate employees using goal setting, reinforcement theory, and equity, and recognize which motivational reward is most effective in various situations.

Participants who attend all four sessions will receive a Business Communications Certificate for Managers from OSU. CEU credits are also available for the sessions.

The fee for the Communications Certificate Series for Managers is $350 per six-hour seminar, $250 per three-hour seminar, and $100 for the webinar. For registration to all four seminars the price is $945, a 10 percent discount, or if three or more participants from the same company register for the all four seminars the price for each individual is $890, a 15 percent discount. Fee includes instruction, materials and refreshments.
