Spears School students Nitish Yeduguri, Saurabh Nandy, Sairam Tangutri, Karush Jaggi, and Goutam Chakraborty (middle), Director of MS in Business Analytics and Graduate Certificate in Business Data Mining, represented OSU at the South Central SAS® Users Group Conference.

Four Oklahoma State University analytics students recently presented their research at the South Central SAS® Users Group (SCSUG) as part of a student consortium that also included students from Louisiana State University and University of Alabama.

The conference was held held on the LSU campus in Baton Rogue, Louisiana.

"This is the third year in a row OSU students' research were presented at the consortium,” said Goutam Chakraborty, Director of MS in Business Analytics and Graduate Certificate in Business Data Mining. “Our students Saurabh Nandy, Karush Jaggi, Sairam Tangutri and Nitish Yeduguri represented OSU very well at the consortium.”

All four students are in their second year of pursuing their master’s degree in the Watson Graduate School at the Spears School of Business.

Karush Jaggi is pursing a MS in MIS with a focus on data mining. His research is entitled Debt Collection Through SAS® Analytics Lens.

“The paper is about using an analytical approach to debt collection and elaborates on the data mining techniques that can be used therein,” said Jaggi. “Considering the paper was a result of my summer internship with a debt collection company, it meant a lot in terms of showcasing my acquired understanding of the domain without any prior finance/econ background. This opportunity to present was also a great platform for me to understand how to connect the dots between a data mining approach and its final business application, which I believe is very crucial.”

Saurabh Nandy is also pursuing a MS in MIS with a focus on data mining. Nandy’s research is entitled Readmission Analysis of COPD Patients.

“The project was basically to determine the readmission rate of COPD patients depending on the medicine prescribed to them and trying to find out the better medicine with less readmission chances,” said Nandy. “I would like to thank Dr. Chakraborty for providing me this opportunity. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to present my research at South Central SAS® Users Group. It helped me interact with professionals and gain some insights regarding my future projects.”

Sairam Tanguturi is also pursuing a MS in MIS with a focus on data mining. His research is entitled A Study of Cancer Research by Small Businesses: A Text Analytics Approach Using SAS® Enterprise Miner.

“We tried to pinpoint what attracts government funding to small businesses doing cancer research so as to benefit any potential entrepreneurs looking to enter the field,” said Tanguturi. “It was a great experience to meet and share ideas with both academic peers and people from industry and also was a humbling experience to meet highly learned researchers in my field of study, data analytics.”

Nithish Yeduguri is also pursuing a MS in MIS with a focus on data mining. His research is entitled A Study of Cancer Research by Small Businesses: A Text Analytics Approach using SAS® Enterprise Miner. “Studying the abstracts that were awarded funding by SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research, a U.S. government program), finding the themes or topics existing in the abstracts and group them into non-overlapping groups based on their content,” said Yeduguri. “It was a great opportunity to implement the knowledge we obtained from our coursework. Also it was nice attending conferences and get to know about applications of data science in different industries.”

The South Central SAS® Users Group is a volunteer organization, serving SAS® users in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The organization is run by SAS® users to create opportunities for users to connect across the region, while supporting and fostering an environment of growth, development and education among SAS® users.
