OSU teams place tops in Data Mining Shootout |
|
Three teams of students from Oklahoma State University placed in the top three spots at this year’s national data mining competition known as the “Data Mining Shootout.” The members of each of the winning teams were enrolled in a marketing class in the Spears School of Business that trains students to use data mining techniques to enhance a company’s marketing efforts. All the students are also earning data mining certifications.
Professor Goutam Chakraborty, class instructor, makes entry into the annual competition a requirement for students in his class on data mining and customer resource management. “I couldn’t be more proud of their accomplishments. To place in the top three with 40 teams registered shows that they have definitely been gaining the skills they need for optimum performance in the real world.”
The students competed by applying their data research techniques to a hypothetical problem, which began with a company’s desire to identify new customers without the expensive blanket advertising it had done in the past. The students are seeking their master’s of science in Management Information Systems at OSU, which is a program directed by Dr. Meg Kletke.
OSU Students in the top teams included Team #1: Mohammed Dwikat, Mallikarjuna Chaitanya Jayanty, Priya Jhanji, Deivanavagam Kannabiran and Fery Suryadi. Team #2: Rohit Jaiswal, Vinay Amarnath Kanojia, Kunal C. Parekh and Ankit Saklecha. Team #3: Pavankumar Abbaraju, Rahul Laxman Chavan, Hrishikesh Joshi, Parag Avinash Kode and Shruti Palasamudram Ramesh.
Students from each of the winning teams will win an expense-paid trip to Las Vegas to participate in the 2007 Data Mining Conference in early October. The annual Data Mining Shootout is sponsored by SAS, a leading software firm, and Inductis, a professional services company.
