Events
- The Spears School of Business is hosting the "Eminent Scholar Research Presentation," featuring Dr. David A. Whetten, a nationally recognized scholar from Brigham Young University, on Friday, Nov. 30, at 3 p.m. in Student Union, Case Study II. Whetton, who is the Jack Wheatley Professor and director of the Faculty Center at BYU, will speak on “Predicting Consistently High Corporate Social Performance Ratings: Some Surprising Results.” The presentation is sponsored by the Ardmore Professorship, the Department of Management and the Department of Marketing. Prior to joining the Marriott School of Management in 1994, Whetton was at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He was the founding editor of the Foundations for Organizational Science, and served as editor of the Academy of Management Review. He has published more than 70 articles and books including the award-winning management text Developing Management Skills. He has been active in the Academy of Management, receiving the Distinguished Service Award (1996) and serving as national president (2000).
- The School of Accounting’s two conferences drew big crowds
More than 170 people attended the Oil and Gas Accounting
Conference and 355 people attended the Accounting and Financial
Reporting Conference. The conferences featured national and regional
experts in their fields and allowed the professionals an opportunity to
earn 12 hours of CPE credit. The Oil and Gas Accounting Conference and the Accounting and Financial Reporting Conference were held early November and presented by School of Accounting. Student News
- SSB Student Services was busy with outreach work in October.
- Scholars Day was Oct. 18, and Dr. Mark Weiser, the Junior Scholar Leaders and Student Services' Sarah Chabinak hosted more than 100 high school scholars
- Alumni Joe Merrifield spoke to the SSB Living Learning Community on Oct. 10 .
- Dr. Craig Robison and SSB Ambassadors made a recruiting trip to Duncan on Oct. 25 and attended the Stillwater High School College Fair on Oct. 16.
- Thirteen OSU graduate (eleven from MS in MIS and two from MS in Engineering) students received SAS/OSU Data Mining Certificates at an award ceremony on Nov. 8, 2007.
Research
- Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, professor of marketing, made an invited presentation titled “Data Mining Programs” to the American Statistical Association's Oklahoma Chapter’s meeting on Nov. 8, 2007, in Stillwater.
Also, his paper “A multidimensional Scale for Measuring Country Image,” co-authored with Vishal Lala and Tony Allred, was accepted for publication in the Journal of International Consumer Marketing.
- The paper “A Holistic Approach to Manufacturing Systems Modeling” by Dr. Dursun Delen, associate professor of management science and information systems, was accepted for publication in the International Journal of Simulation and Process Modeling (IJSPM).
- The book Accounting: An International Perspective by Dr. Gary K. Meek, Oscar S. Gellein/Deloitte & Touche Professor of Accounting, has been translated into Indonesian by Penerbit Andi and published as Akuntansi: Perspektif Internasional. The book has been previously translated into Japanese, Spanish, Russian and Korean. It was co-author by Helen Gernon (University of Oregon).
- Dr. T. Sterling Wetzel, professor and coordinator of the M.S. in Accounting Program, had an article published in Advances in Public Interest Accounting, Volume 13. “Can Investors Detect Fraud Using Financial Statements: An Exploratory Study" was co-authored by Liming Guan (University of Hawaii at Manoa) and Kathleen A. Kaminski (University of South Dakota).
- Dr. Pat Dorr, Haskell Cudd Professor of Accounting, received the “2007 Journal of Information Systems Best Reviewer Award” from The Journal of Information Systems, which is published by the Information Systems Section of the American Accounting Association.
- As part of the Regents Professor lecture series, Dr. John Mowen, Nobel Chair of Marketing Strategy, gave a campus-wide seminar entitled: “Tsunamic Tragedies: Earthquakes, Obesity, and the Survival of the Human Species.” The Nov. 14 lecture was based upon a book that Mowen is writing.
- Dr. Tom Stone, professor or management, has been appointed associate editor of Career Development International Journal.
- Dr. Joe Jadlow, professor of economics, recently presented the paper "An Economic Analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court's Recent Antitrust Decision on Vertical Price-Fixing" at the Annual Meeting of the Missouri Valley Economic Association in Kansas City, Mo.
- Dr. Betty Simkins had the following paper accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Corporate Finance. “Ten Common Misconceptions About Enterprise Risk Management” was co-authored with John Fraser (chief risk officer at Hydro One).
- At the Financial Management Association Annual Meeting (FMA) in October the following activities took place:
- Simkins presented the reseach paper “The Diversity of Corporate Board Committees and Financial Performance,” which was co-authored with Dr. Dave Carter and Gary Simpson and Frank D’Souza (Loyola College Maryland).
- Simkins and Dr. Antonio Camara presented their paper “Valuing Options When Shareholders Fact Bankruptcy Risk."
- Simkins was also the moderator of a roundtable discussion on “Enterprise Risk Management” that will be published in the Journal of Applied Finance and a panelist at the “Journal Editors’ Roundtable” presentation.

Lowry has been named as the company's vice president, chief financial officer and secretary. He previously held the titles of vice president, controller and secretary. Lowry has been employed by Panhandle since 2001, having joined Panhandle with the acquisition of Wood Oil Company where he held the position of controller for 15 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Oklahoma State University and has 33 years of experience working for both private and publicly held oil and gas exploration and production companies.
