Events
Research
- Dr. Tom Stone, professor of management, with J.L. Kisamore, I.M. Jawahar, will present "A comparison of academic misconduct perceptions between traditional and online learning environments" at the upcoming Hawaii International Conference on Education.
- Dr. Tom Stone, with J.L. Kisamore, I.M. Jawahar, presented "Effects of a culture of academic integrity" at the Midwest Academy of Management in October at Kansas City, Mo.
- Dr. Margaret A. White, associate professor of management, has been elected as a representative at large for the Strategic Process group of Strategic Management Society.
- Dr. Charlotte Wright's paper “Eco-Efficiency and Firm Value” was accepted for publication in the Journal of Accounting and Public Policy. Co-authors are Charlene Sinkin (Bryant University) and Royce Burnett (University of Miami and SSB alumni).
- Dr. Dursun Delen, associate professor of MSIS, presented “Knowledge Discovery with Data and Text Mining” at the Knowledge and Process Management Symposium in Tulsa on Oct. 3-4. He was also on the organizations committee for this symposium.
The SSB Shines at the M2007 Data Minining Conference
- Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, professor of marketing, co-chaired the M2007 Data Mining Conference in Las Vegas on Oct. 1-2. Hosted by SAS and now in its tenth year, M2007 has become the largest data mining conference in the world and was attended by more than 800 people (mostly professionals and some academics).

The Spears School was represented by the following people at the conference.
- Dr. Ramesh Sharda presented a paper titled “Forecasting Box Office Success of Movies using Data Mining Techniques: Recent Results."
- Dr. Dursun Delen presented a paper titled “Analysis of Research Literature with Text Mining."
- Rohit Jaiswal and Kunal Parekh, MSIS graduate students under the guidance of Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, made a poster presentation titled "Cross-Selling Home Loans to Credit Card Customers: A Data Mining Application."
- Natasha Madan, a MSIS graduate student under the guidance of Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, made a poster presentation titled “Market Segmentation for Efficient Catalogue Mailing Campaigns."
- Yash Kandalya, a MSIS graduate student under the guidance of Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, made a poster presentation titled “Predictive Ensemble Model to Formulate Cross-sell and Up-sell Strategies in B2C Finance Sector."
- The conference also hosted the awards ceremony for the first annual Data Mining Shootout, presented by SAS and Inductis:
- Three teams of OSU Masters students took the top three spots at a national “data mining” shootout competition organized by SAS (a leading provider of data mining software) and Inductis (a global consulting firm specializing in analytics and data mining).
The students, mostly from MSIS master's programs, built predictive models that accurately predicted which customers were most likely to buy for a mail-order catalogue company. The OSU team models produced more accurate results than those submitted by the other 30 teams from other U.S. universities.
One member from each OSU team won an all expenses-paid trip to M2007 in Las Vegas, where they presented their findings.
- 1st Place team: Rohit Jaiswal, Vinay Amarnath Kanojia, Kunal C. Parekh, Ankit Saklecha.
- 2nd place team: Pavankumar Abbaraju, Rahul Laxman Chavan, Hrishikesh Joshi, Parag Avinash Kode and Shruti Palasamudram Ramesh.
- 3rd place team: Mohammed Dwikat, Mallikarjuna Chaitanya Jayanty, Priya Jhanji, Deivanavagam Kannabiran, Fery Suryadi. ||
The OSU students were enrolled in Chakraborty’s data mining
course, which examines how useful information can be generated from
large sets of data. The data mining course is a key component of the
recently launched Graduate Certificate in Business Data Mining Program.

Awards
- Congratulates to Cortney Williams in SSB Student Services. She was honored as the William S. Spears Academic Advisor of the year and recognized at a university-wide ceremony on Oct. 11.
- Finance faculty Drs. Betty Simkins and Antonio Camara are the co-authors of “Valuing Options when Stockholders face Bankruptcy Risk,” which won Best Paper Award in Risk Management for 2007 at the FMA Annual Meeting Competitive Paper Awards. The Financial Management Associations (FMA) stated in the notification letter that it received a record number of high quality submissions this year and that the review process was extremely challenging. Simkins said, “Antonio wrote the theoretical model and I tested his model empirically using Option Metrics, a new database the SSB subscribed to last year.” They will be honored at the 2007 FMA Annual Meeting Luncheon on Friday, Oct. 19 in Orlando, Fla.
Student News and Accomplishments
- Once again the OSU FMA organization has been selected for the FMA Superior Chapter Award by Financial Management Association International. For approximately 20 years, the OSU FMA chapter has received this honor for the high level of commitment from OSU students and faculty. They were also awarded the Silver Membership Development Award, which is given to chapters that have recruited between 99 and 75 students. Less than five percent of all FMA chapters achieve this goal.
- NGEAO (Natural Gas Energy Association of Oklahoma) invited Dr. Betty Simkins, Williams Chair and associate professor finance, and four students to attend its annual meeting. Simkins said, “This was a great networking event. There were about 270 members in attendance from a range of companies (large such as ConocoPhillips to small energy firms, etc). And, we have many OSU alums who are part of this group – so they were very delighted to see us attend this year! I heard many compliments about how impressed people were with our students.” The organization’s web site is www.ngeao.org.
- The Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization (CEO) will have a social and networking event on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 5:30 p.m. The event will start out in Business 018 and move to the lobby of the Business Building. - OKLAHOMA CITY, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- OGE Energy Corp. announced today that Steve Merrill has been named chief financial officer of Enogex. He most recently served as vice president and chief financial officer for Cayenne Drilling, LLC and Sunstone Energy Group, LLC. He holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from Oklahoma State University.
