APPLICATIONS AND ADMISSIONS:

Q.) How do I apply and get admitted to Oklahoma State University?

A.) First, you may want to visit the official OSU website and click on the link for Future Students on the left side of the screen.  Then choose either the Graduate or Undergraduate option and the website will direct you to OSU Office of Undergraduate Admissions or the Oklahoma State University - Graduate College.  As an undergraduate student, you can click on the option for Transfer Students located on the left side of the screen and select the option that best applies towards your interests.  At this point, you can view OSU requirements for admission, view the application deadlines, and download an application.  You will need to submit this application, as well as the application fee, before the deadline listed on the website.  At this point, your application will be processed and you will be notified as to the admissions decision. 

 

TRANSFER CREDITS:

Q.) What about the college credits I have already earned?  Will OSU accept them?

A.) The credit hours that OSU will accept vary greatly depending on which academic institution you have been attending and the courses you have been taking while enrolled there.  If you have pre-existing credits from Community Colleges, Universities, AP, CLEP, and Concurrent work, please make your transcripts available to the OSU Office of Undergraduate Admissions.  For a more in depth analysis of your academic transcript and transfer credit potential, the Transfer Credit FAQ page will answer many of the questions you may have about this process as well as contact information to have someone look over your transcripts to verify your transfer credit hours.  To look specifically at some Oklahoma, National, and International 2-year colleges and universities, this page will provide you with online Transfer Guides and allow the opportunity for you to see exactly which credits will count at OSU from the listed institutions.

CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY:

Q.) I have never been to Stillwater or OSU.  How can I find out what to do and how to get involved?

A.) There are innumerable resources available where you can find information and discover new and exciting events and activities taking place on campus, in town, and in the state.  Here are just a few examples:

On-Campus Attractions  
There are plenty of resources available to discover new ways of becoming involved and entertained while attending Oklahoma State University.
   
Campus Recreation Center website Interested in getting a workout?  Here you can find information on the Colvin Center and other athletic activities for students.
Orange Peel This is the official site for the annual event that brings big musical acts and comedians to Stillwater.
OSU Sports and Athletics For Cowboy and Cowgirl sporting events and information, be sure to visit the official Athletic Department website.  Here you can view schedules, learn about the past, present, and future of OSU sports, as well as purchase tickets for upcoming sporting events.
Lights on Stillwater Another annual event in Stillwater, vendors and organizations congregate on campus to hand out freebies and information.
OSU Allied Arts Into music, art, or theater?  Then Allied Arts are for you. 
The Daily O'Collegian The “O’Colly” is the student-run university newspaper.  Here you keep up to date on the happenings on the OSU campus.
OSU Campus Life This site will provide you with plenty of information regarding activities, groups, clubs, and organizations that you can become involved with on the OSU campus.  The OSU Campus Life website can be a very useful resource for discovering elements of the university in which you can become involved with to help your personal growth and at the same time adding to your resume for improved marketability.  The Non-Traditional Student links page provides you with many excellent resources to become involved on campus and to find groups of other students with similar interests and situations.

ORIENTATION:

Q.) Is there an Orientation class or program that I can become involved with to make my adjustment to OSU go a little more easily?

A.) At this point, transfer students are not required to participate in a Freshmen Orientation course, but there is a program that may assist you with this sometimes difficult transition.
 
The Peer Resource Enrichment Program (P.R.E.P.) is designed to assist students who are entering the Spears School of Business (SSB).  The program pairs a new transfer student or freshmen undergraduate student with a Junior/Senior business student who has demonstrated leadership and excellence in the SSB.  Our mentors are eager to serve as a mentor to new students and help them adjust to university life and serve the role as a liaison between the student, OSU, and primarily, the Spears School of Business.

Mentors interact with their fellow students in a variety of fun ways and they provide information on topics ranging from academics to social, service, and recreational activities in Stillwater.  Arranged tours and student meetings introduce valuable resources in an enjoyable format and allow students to develop connections with their peers.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

Q.) I am interested in attending Oklahoma State University, but I am not from the United States and I am curious about resources that may be available for me.  Are there programs designed with international students in mind?

A.) Yes, there are.  International Students have a variety of resources and activities designed specifically to make their education at OSU go as smoothly as possible.  A good place to start would be to visit the OSU International Students and Scholars (ISS) webpage and see what kinds of information they can provide.  Also be sure to visit the OSU Multicultural Student Center website to see the different types of opportunities that are available for students of all different ethnic backgrounds and cultures.

PARKING ON CAMPUS:

Q.) I have heard some bad things about parking on college campuses.  Where can I find out more about the parking situation in Stillwater?

A.) It seems that parking is a big issue on many college campuses around the country.  OSU is no exception.  The university is working on many different methods to ease the parking situation on campus.  To see some of these methods and for more information on transportation around Stillwater and parking on the OSU campus, please visit Parking and Transit Services.  This site includes further information on The BUS system, parking permits, parking lot locations, and other essentials to getting around town and the campus.  OSU also offers transportation to Oklahoma City and Tulsa on the Big Orange Bus (BOB).  You can visit the BOB OSU Shuttle page for further details on this service.

ACADEMIC ORGANIZATIONS:

Q.) Are there any groups or organizations specific to transfer students that I can become involved with?

A.) Yes, in fact there are.  Tau Sigma, the National Transfer Student Honors Association, has recently established a new chapter at Oklahoma State University.  This OSU Tau Sigma website provides more information regarding this organization and a link to their official website.  The Transfer Student Organization (TSO) is another organization that was recently established at Oklahoma State University.  This page provides some additional information on this organization which is provided through the office of University Academic Services.  Since some transfer students tend to be older than the traditional students and are either reestablishing their academic careers or just getting into academia after an extended period of time, some of you may be interested in participating in the OSU Non-Traditional Student Services department.  In addition, nearly all transfer students are not required to live in the dorms, and in fact opt to live off-campus.  Those of you who fit this category may be interested in the OSU Off-Campus Student Association.

JOBS AND EMPLOYMENT:

Q.) Where can I go if I am looking for full or part-time employment while I am a student at Oklahoma State University?

A.) For full-time and part-time jobs on the OSU campus, your main resource will be the OSU Human Resources homepage.  They can provide you with information on job openings that are currently available.  This site is updated regularly, so the information listed there is quite accurate.  Other resources for finding employment include classified ads in the local papers, such as the Stillwater NewsPress and The Daily O'Collegian.  There are also a couple of Career Services centers on campus designed to assist students find employment and prepare for the workplace.  Transfer students have access to two locations on campus oriented towards improving the marketability of our graduates.  Business students can utilize the resources provided by SSB Career Services (112 BUS) and all OSU students can visit OSU Career Services (360-370 SU) for assistance.

FAMILY AND DAYCARE:

Q.) I have children and need to locate a place where I can find quality daycare for my kids while I am at work or in class.  Where can I find more information on this?

A.) Some transfer students are single-parents trying to raise one or more children, hold down a job, and continue their education.  Some parents have a spouse who also works or attends class on a full-time basis.  Whatever your circumstances in life, we understand how difficult it can be to juggle all of these responsibilities.  To find more information on childcare located on and off campus, visit the Family Resource Center website.  There are many off-campus in-home daycare facilities located in Stillwater, and there are also a few daycare business facilities in town.  The Oklahoma Department of Human Services provides an excellent search tool for locating daycare facilities near you.  To find daycare facilities, please visit the Oklahoma Child Care Locator and for general daycare and parenting information you can visit Parenting Made Easier.

HOUSING AND ACCOMODATIONS:

Q.) I am transferring to OSU and I need to know what my housing options are on and off-campus.  Where can I find this information?

A.) There are several resources available for locating housing information.  If you are interested in living on-campus, the first stop will be Residential Life, where you will find information on meal plans, housing options, married student housing, and all other information covered within the Department of Residential Life.  Beginning in the fall semester of 2006, we will be offering the Spears School of Business Living-Learning Community.  Here you can find information regarding the Spears School of Business Living-Learning Community and what it entails.
For information regarding off-campus housing options, be sure to visit the Stillwater Housing Guide that contains links and contact information to many of the apartment complexes and other housing companies located in town.  If your interests are leasing a house or apartment, buying a home, or any other options, this site can provide you with the necessary information to make sure that you have a roof over your head when you get to Stillwater.

STUDY ABROAD:

Q.) I am interested in attending a university in another country for a semester or two, does OSU have a program that will allow me to do this?

A.) The OSU Study Abroad Office website provides educational opportunities for students who may be interested at learning through other institutions all over the world.  There are many opportunities and different enrollment arrangements to fit the wants and needs of most OSU students.  Also be sure to visit the International Education and Outreach website for more information on personal and educational opportunities around the world.  This website provides specific information related directly towards students in the Spears School of Business including courses and opportunities available to travel and study abroad.

VOLUNTEERING AND UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH:

Q.) I like to participate in activities that help other people and improve our society while providing me with valuable experience and an opportunity to improve the quality of my resume.  Are there any opportunities for volunteer work at OSU?

A.) There are numerous opportunities on and off-campus for students to get involved in the community and make a difference in other people’s lives.  These activities look great to potential employers on a resume, as well as building the personal skills and sense of accomplishment for those who participate in such activities.  The OSU Volunteer Center informs students of upcoming events for volunteers, participation requirements, and other useful information for those interested in spending their time to help others.  For Undergraduate Research Opportunities, consult your Academic Department for details.  Also visit OSU Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer as well as OSU Office of University Research Services for further information regarding research at Oklahoma State University.

ACADEMIC RULES AND REGULATIONS:

Q.) I know that different universities have different policies and procedures that students must follow.  Where can I find out this information so I can be better informed of what is required of me as a student?

A.) In terms of rules and regulations, you can find academic information regarding policies and procedures from several sources.  The best place to start in terms of these questions would be with your Academic Advisor.   There are some other resources online that may answer any inquiries you may have regarding the rules and regulations of the university, for example the Student Information Page provides much of this information.  You can also visit the Policies and Procedures page which will also cover many of these topics.  In addition, you can refer to the printed University Catalog, or online University Catalog here

CALCULATING GPAs:

Q.) Where can I find a resource that will help me to learn how to calculate my own GPA so I know where I stand every semester?

A.) This GPA Calculating Spreadsheet page presented by the University of California Berkeley provides an online GPA calculator to assist you in determining your GPA for a given semester or cumulatively.

ACADEMIC ADVISING:

Q.) Who do I talk to when I need to get enrolled or I have a question about my degree or education in general?

A.) The best resource for this situation is your or Academic Counselor/Advisor.  These are trained staff members in Business Student Services who specialize in the academic development of our students.  For contact information or to set up an appointment with an advisor, please visit the Spears School of Business Student Services webpage.  You must see your counselor/advisor every semester before you can enroll in courses, so be sure to get in the office (Business Student Services – 201L BUS) and meet with them.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID:

Q.) Who can I talk to about receiving some sort of financial assistance to get me through my degree plan?

A.) Many students rely on financial assistance in order to complete their education.  If you are interested in applying for scholarships, you can visit the Guide to Scholarships that are specific to the Spears School of Business.  For more on scholarships specific to Business, you can also visit the SSB Scholarships page.  For general scholarship and financial aid information, the Scholarships and Financial Aid website provides plenty of financial resources available for students.  If you are interested in Work-Study programs, the previous website will also contain links to those sources.

 

TUTORING:

Q.)  I have always had trouble in a certain subject, and I have to take that class this semester.  Where can I go to find someone who will help me?

A.) There are plenty of resources on campus to help you with your academic situations, and there are a variety of tutoring locations on campus to suit your needs.  Tutoring is not only for people who are having trouble in a certain class, but also for students who are doing well and want to stay ahead of the game.  One of those locations is University Academic Services, where you can receive one-on-one tutoring in a variety of disciplines.  This tutoring service is free as long as you show up for your appointment.  Drop by their office today and sign up for help in the class you are attempting to conquer.  Many students ask for assistance in their math classes.  There is a free math lab located on campus called the MLRC.  Drop by the Mathematics Learning Resource Center Homepage for more information on this free resource.  For those struggling or trying to stay on top of their English Composition classes or brush up on their writing skills, visit the Writing Center and make an appointment to have one of their qualified staff members assist you with your writing.  For a comprehensive list of tutoring topics and contact information, be sure to visit Tutoring Resources at OSU.  For additional help and resources for a specific course that are not provided by the links posted here, please refer to the department office for that discipline.

TESTING CENTER:

Q.) If I want to test out of a certain class or if I am interested in taking a test in order to be accepted into graduate school, where can I locate this department on campus?

A.) The best place to start will be the University Assessment and Testing website, which will cover much of this information.  If you are curious about AP credits, or CLEP testing for a specific course, you can find that information through that website listed above.  University Assessment and Testing also provides a wide range of graduate-level placement exams such as the LSAT, GMAT, GRE, MCAT and many others.  For placement exams in a foreign language, be sure to visit the Language Lab Center through the Foreign Languages and Literature Department in the College of Arts and Sciences.  Foreign language placement testing is located in 206 and 207 Gunderson Hall, just visit the above website for further information.

BURSAR'S OFFICE:

Q.) I need to pay my bill for school and I would also like to see exactly what charges have been placed on my account, but which department should I talk to about this information?

A.) The department responsible for all student fiscal matters is the Bursar’s Office.  They handle meal plan and housing charges, All-Sports tickets, traffic tickets, and all other fees, fines, bills, charges, and deductions incurred while attending OSU.  For matters related to Bursar bill inquiries and payment information, you can find the website for the Office of the Bursar here.  

GRADUATE COLLEGE:

Q.) I am interested in continuing my education beyond my Bachelor’s Degree, perhaps a Master’s or even a Ph.D., but where can I find further information about my options?

A.) For those interested in continuing their education to pursue a Master’s or Doctorate degree, please visit the Oklahoma State University - Graduate College website for all application and enrollment information.  Also available for students is the Spears School of Business Distance Learning.  For information on several distance learning opportunities, visit this website for Business Distance Learning Programs that are available.  A very popular option for business students is to continue with their Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Oklahoma State University.  For further information on this option, visit the MBA Program at OSU webpage.
