MS in MIS program
The Master of Science in Management Information Systems Program (MS in MIS) focuses on providing solutions to business information and data needs. The MS-MIS program was ranked No. 29 in the North American rankings for Information Systems programs in 2015-16 in the Eduniversal Best Masters ranking. The program was No. 23 among universities in the United States. In addition, our online master’s in MIS is ranked No. 14 in the Top 50 Online Masters Degrees in Information Technology Management 2015, according to Eduniversal.com. The program was started in 1998 and has over 1000 graduates. The core curriculum for the 34-hour program includes courses on MIS in business, database management, data warehousing, systems analysis, programming for analytics, descriptive analytics, visualization and professional development. The MS in MIS program is a designated STEM program.
Over the years, the MS-MIS program has increased in size and produced several graduates who have been successful in both IT and analytics. To accommodate the changes in the IT marketplace, our MS-MIS curriculum has been revised. According to Dr. Rathin Sarathy, MS-MIS Coordinator, “The new curriculum recognizes the importance of data, analytics and IT in organizational decision making. IT plays an important role in analytics training because in today’s global organizations data has to be collected and cleaned from many different types of systems before analytics can be performed. Students are instructed in the science of dealing with large volumes of data for analytics. We also emphasize an approach to descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics that is applicable across platforms. The recent addition of several well-trained, technically sophisticated PhDs to our faculty is a huge boost to our program.” Students interested exclusively in business analytics using the SAS® platform may explore the Business Analytics program.
Data Science Option
The focus of the Data Science option is to develop IT professionals with skills in analytics. In particular, we not only provide knowledge and skills in descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics, but also the underlying technological platforms that are needed to support the analytics needs of business. Our program places particular emphasis on big data, warehouse, visualization and open source technologies, as well as on open-source programming using R and Python (among others) for analytics. All our courses are delivered by specialist PhDs with deep analytics and technical skills. The option includes coursework on big data analytics using Hadoop and R, data mining using SAS, predictive analytics using IBM Modeler, and prescriptive analytics.
Our on-line corporate program is geared towards enhancing existing skills and developing new skills for IT professionals in industry. All courses required for the MS-MIS degree, including the data science option, will be offered online.
