Three Oklahoma State University graduate students were selected to be presenters earlier this month at the JMP Discovery Summit 2012 in which more than 400 analytics professionals attended at the SAS World Headquarters in Cary, N.C.

The three students – Parijat Ghosh, Mantosh Sarkar and Jiawen Liu – are pursuing their SAS and Data Mining certificates from OSU’s Spears School of Business.

“JMP Discovery Summit was very informative and had lots of impressive presentations from developers. It’s one of those conferences where you feel lucky to be present,” said Sarkar, who presented a poster titled Data Standardization for Enhanced Outcomes in Cluster Analysis Using JMP.

Liu and Sarkar are master’s students in the Management Science and Information Systems (MSIS) program in the Spears School, while Ghosh is a master’s student in the School of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources.

Ghosh’s poster, titled Prediction of the Success Rate of Video Games, caught the attention of several professionals.

“Many people liked my poster presentation and felt that it was innovative,” she said. “I had a great time at the summit. I got to know so many people with their diverse skill sets. There were many speakers with brilliant presentations and thought-provoking papers. Overall, it was a great experience for me.”

The posted by Liu, titled United States Bill Payment Machine Location Modeling, also was a crowd stopper throughout the summit.

“While presenting my poster, many experts, statisticians and JMP users stopped by to ask questions. Though my topic is very specific, people showed interest and asked a lot of interesting questions,” said Liu. “I enjoyed the summit. I would love to attend again and strongly encourage other students to go to this conference.”

“JMP, part of SAS software suite, is a great tool for visual discovery and exploratory data mining. We use it in the introductory level courses in our data mining program,” said Goutam Chakraborty, professor of marketing and founder of SAS and OSU Data Mining Certificate program. “The JMP conference allowed our students to show off their data mining skills, and I am very happy with the way they interacted and networked with the professionals at the conference.”
