OSU-CHSI presents inaugural awards to two Oklahoma State University alumni

William Paiva presents award to Ipe Paramel. — Ipe Paramel receives the Patterson Foundation Outstanding Innovator: Care Delivery award from OSU Center for Health Systems Innovations Executive Director William Paiva at the organization's board meeting.

The Oklahoma State University Center for Health Systems Innovation presented inaugural awards recognizing excellence in care delivery and data analytics to two OSU alumni.

Ipe Paramel received the Patterson Foundation Outstanding Innovator: Care Delivery award and Vedika Dengada was the recipient of the Patterson Outstanding Innovator: Data Analytics award.

“These innovators exemplify the mission of the OSU Center for Health Systems Innovation to transform health care through creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship,” said William Paiva, Ph.D., executive director of OSU-CHSI. “Through innovation projects being conducted in the field by team members like Ipe Paramel and Vedika Dengada, OSU will improve health care delivery methods for physicians and health outcomes for their patients.”

Paramel, who graduated from OSU Center for Health Sciences with a Master of Science in Health Care Administration in May, was honored for his project, “Identifying Possible Factors that Interfere with Workflow in Rural Oklahoma Family Practice Clinics.”

For the project, launched in 2014, Paramel led a team of innovators in gathering information from rural health professionals and clinics in Oklahoma. The team interviewed and surveyed nearly 200 rural clinic staff and observed 34 clinics during patient care times. The team also examined clinic layout and business classification surveys to determine ways to improve efficiency at rural clinics.

Paramel’s team logged more than 200 hours in the field and is now analyzing the data that was gathered. His team was the first CHSI project to present to and receive approval from the OSU Institutional Review Board.

Dengada, who graduated from the Spears School of Business in July with a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management, was honored for her work in 2014 to bring the Cerner Health Facts database to CHSI.

The database is one of the largest HIPAA-compliant relational databases in existence. It includes electronic medical records from over 50 million patients and hundreds of hospitals covering a 14-year period. CHSI will use the database as part of its predictive medicine work to improve operational, clinical and financial outcomes in health care.
